Becky Albertelli is a writer whose work I have admired in her books Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda and The Upside of Unrequited. Her writing style is powerful and she always puts across strong point and topics.
As many know, her book Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda has recently been adapted into the movie Love, Simon and as you can see I rated the book higher than the movie. However, I must say... This was a fantastic adaptation but little things I read in the book had changed which I felt were needed because I LOVE the book so much. Before I begin, I need to congratulate all of the actors on creating a film with such a strong message as their acting was fantastic and I am so impressed.
In terms of the book, I loved the characterisation and Simon's Story! I loved how the emails were written and tbh it was the perfect book for me. I may not be in the LGBT Community but I enjoyed it so much. It allowed me to read how hard it can be for individuals to come out to their families and how sad it is when exploited. I dislike martin so much... I cannot stop talking about it! Overall the plot, characters and writing deserved the 5 stars.
The film was also a truly great experience. I have now seen it twice and have cried throughout both times. Its such a hard-hitting film which again lets me see how the LGBT community cope and what I can do to help support them. I love the characterisation of Simon in the film. I think Nick Robinson played it really well. Also, have to give it to Katherine Langford as she was the perfect choice for Leah. I have to say I was expecting to really dislike Leah in the movie as I wasn't her biggest fan in the book. While reading the book, I really enjoyed Abby's character however while watching it twice, I dislike the character of Abby in the film and instead love Leah. I loved seeing Simon's relationship with his family and I was impressed overall.
Now you may be thinking... Why 4/5 stars. There were certain aspects which really just got to me that I wish they had added and/or not changed. For no spoilers, let's just say I did not appreciate how a certain individual was visualised as Blue and not kept in complete mystery. I loved in the book when Blue turned out to be so unexpected. I also wish they had left the scene in which Blue puts the T-shirt in Simon's locker. While reading that scene, I felt so much love in my heart. I also think changing the musical was uncalled for however props to Natasha Rothwell as Mrs Albright as she was just so sassy and fantastic and brought me so much enjoyment.
Now I seem super bitter. I don't mean to be!!!
I loved the film and I can't wait to eventually see it again as it's made it into my favourite movies list!
